Revisiting Make Up Geek: Back To Basics

Make Up Geek
Z Palette with Make Up Geek shadows

As of lately I’ve felt in a bit of a make up slump. Not many new releases have inspired me and the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill release I was really looking forward to left a bad taste in my mouth (here). In order to reignite the passion I started to go through my bulging Make up drawers and to my surprise found so many products I have loved and forgotten about.

The main items inspiring me and helping me to feel creative have been the Make Up Geek shadows. I really can’t fathom why I haven’t used these in so long, they are fantastic.

Price Point

Make up Geek have such a wide range of shadow shades available and are great if you are on a budget. Their matte/ shimmer shadows have over 42 colours available and are priced from £3.95. There are also 14 foiled shades available (from £6.50) and 8 duo chromes for $4.95 – £7.95. At such an purse friendly rate you can’t really go wrong and with so many shades available the brand gives you the ability to create so many looks.

As we are on the topic of value for money I feel these shadows are great for beginners as they are cheap enough to buy a few and experiment with colour until you work out what you like and what suits you best.

Essentially you are creating your own palette with colours of your choice therefore hopefully, you will get good use out of them as your not going to be stuck with the odd shade that doesn’t appeal to you. In my opinion this is a bonus when considering the price point.

Quality

Make Up Geek do make quality shadows. I find the formula nice, soft and easy to work with. I started using these when I first started to up my make up game and they have always been very comfortable to use. They give a great blend and you are able to build up a seamless gradient of colours with basic skills.

The colour pay off is good considering the price range. Are there better shadows available? Yes but you will be paying a lot more for them.

The pigmentation is there and as I said previous they blend well due to their soft texture, so if you wanted the colour to be a bit stronger it is very easy to build up.

This is another reason why I think these are great if you were just starting to experiment with make up and finding your feet. I used to have such a heavy hand with eye shadow but whilst using these I learnt to be a bit lighter, take my time and build up the colour and look I wanted.

Downfalls

I only have one issue with Make Up Geek shadows and that is they are so soft they tend to have a bit of fallout. It is never anything to drastic, never ruins my look (if using these I do my eye make up first and then move on with the rest of my face) but it is my only fault with them.

To Conclude

Make Up Geek have really given me some nostalgia over the last few weeks and it has been so much fun. I would really recommend taking a look at these if you love make up and are on a tight budget. If you are just starting out, don’t want to spend loads but want something with quality and something you can learn from I would honestly give these a try.

Make Up Geek have recently launched some new products after being a bit quiet for a while. They now have colour pigments available that are so bright in colour I can’t wait to try them out. They have also started selling their own empty palettes which you can fill with your choice of shadows. I like these as they have the MG logo and you can keep all their shadows in one place (some of my Z palettes are a mixture of brands and it can get confusing).

Do you ever go back to brands you haven’t used in a while and wonder why you stopped using them? For me it really has been nice to look back at products I haven’t used in ages and start to fall in love with them all over again. Let me know your thoughts and feelings in the comment section below and we can start discussing.

Next post will be up on Friday so until then have a good week.

  1. I’ve heard so many good things about Makeup Geek but always seem to forget about them when I’m shopping around for new products! I think it’s because they’re sold in singles, which is a lot of fun but also seems like a lot of faff!

    1. Once you get started building your own palette it becomes a bit of an addiction. I buy about four or five at a time so that I can create a nice eye look. Make up Geek have been quiet for a while I’m hoping they come back into the game a bit more because they have quality products x

  2. I’ve never heard of Make Up Geek but I love the name and the box looks super cute and fun. It’s such good value for money too and the shades are really pretty. I love that you can blend the colours easily and create a gradient, I’m not really into makeup but I think I’d even enjoy getting creative like that. Great review Kate and thanks for introducing me to a new brand <3 xx

    1. Glad you enjoyed Bexa. I love the name too. Value for money wise these are great and work really well. Thank you for reading x

  3. I am a sucker for pastel/pink shades and I just love the fact that there are so many of these variations of pink. I think makeup geek has the best formulas for eye-shadow. The shade is always pigmented and smooth.

    1. I agree their colour range is amazing. They have so much to offer as a brand and are so affordable. Plus as you said they work so well and are easy to use x x

  4. I *try* to go back to my old makeup stash, but I have to confess I buy so much stuff, it’s sickening.
I see your selection is very autumnal 🙂 Did you see the new palette she has just released? It looks similar to yours. It’s beautiful.
I don’t mind a bit of fallout, honestly.
Can you buy MUG shadows in stores in the UK or do you also have to order online? I can only get them via Beauty Bay (and a lot of them are sold out)

    1. I know what you mean I buy so much I really forget about items I loved. I’ve seen the new palette I think it’s called pumpkin spice and looks great for autumn. I also get mine from beauty bay, I don’t think we have it in stores. I buy most of my make up online though because taking three little ones in a cosmetic shop is hard work 😂. Thanks for reading x

      1. Yeah afraid so I know what you mean by them having a lot of shades out of stock. There is also the make up Geek website but I worry about customs 😅 x
