The Beauty Book Shelf: Handmade Beauty A Review

Handmade Beauty
Handmade Beauty: Natural recipes for your face, body and hair

The beauty book shelf is back and this month I will be looking at Juliette Goggin and Abi Righton’s Handmade Beauty

Handmade beauty is a hardback, hefty book full of natural recipes to make your own skin, body and hair care products. I have loads to say on this so I will get started.

First off the book is larger then I thought it would be especially as I only paid £8.94 on Amazon for it. It is quite heavy and looks to be of a higher value compared with the price I paid. Inside is full of lovely illustrations and photography that are so pleasing to look at you will be dying to start making the products for yourself.

I’m going to say right at the start, if you know anyone that loves DIY projects and is a beauty addict like myself then this would make a great gift.

The book begins with an Introduction, a few tips before you begin your DIY projects and ideas on where to source the ingredients needed. It also goes into further detail of each ingredient giving examples of the benefits it has for the skin and why it is used in the products. From the first few sections you can really learn a lot about skincare in general. There is also detail on measurements, with instruction on understanding the measurements used throughout the book. The first few pages are thorough in getting you prepared.

The next section is about equipment needed to make your skincare. A lot of what is needed can be found in your kitchen but you may need to purchase a few things in order to make more complex recipes. I’ve had a little gander online for a few things I need and many of them are inexpensive. I’d advise taking a look through the recipes to decide what you would like to make first and getting what you need for that particular one instead of going full force buying everything suggested.

Once you have everything you need your ready to cook up your products. The book contains step by step guides for almost anything your face, body of hair could need. You can start at any level. Go big by producing a cleanser, hand cream and shampoo or start smaller and make a lip balm, body scrubs or mask. The choice is yours.

A little look at the lovely photography and recipes

The recipes are laid out in sections, starting with Skincare and then moving into body and hair care. It is very easy to find something you want to make and you are given different options. There is not just a one mask fits all recipe but many different ones which can fit around skincare type or your skins need. This goes for all of the recipes body care and hair care there is so much choice from this book.

From the final chapters you will find topics such as finishing touches (which will have you buying or saving up loads of empty bottles, jars and ribbons in order to make you creations look as beautiful as they do in the book), and a Glossary of ingredients. The glossary, for me, is the most interesting part of the book as it goes into a little more detail of the ingredients used and their benefits. I also gained understanding of my current over the counter products from the lists.

Handmade Beauty has gained a place on my beauty book shelf for so many reasons. I love learning and gaining knowledge of skincare. I love making my own products and this book helps do that to such a great extent. The step by step guides are impeccable and make it easy for a novice, like myself, to create something pretty and usable.

As I said before the book would make a great gift for someone who loves homemade products. It’s fun and pretty. Hopefully if I progress and become a dab hand at making a few things for myself I will be buying some cute packaging to make family members products for Christmas. For me handmade gifts give a special touch to Christmas so I will be trying out the bath bomb recipes.
